Mesmo com todo o sucesso do The Commodores, Lionel Richie acaba se afastando para poder investir em projetos paralelos. Em 1980 produziu e escreveu canções para o disco de Kenny Rogers e, em 1981, ganhou o disco de platina com o dueto formado com Dianna Ross para o hit "Endless Love", que foi trilha sonora do filme "Amor sem fim".

O álbum de estréia em sua carreira solo foi lançado em 1982 e intitulado "Lionel Ritchie". O álbum rapidamente atingiu o primeiro lugar das paradas da Billboard, com os hits "Truly" e "You are". Empolgado com o sucesso Lionel lança seu segundo álbum, "Can't slow down", em 1983. Impulsionado pelos hits "Hello" e "All night long (All night)" o álbum ganha o prêmio Diamante da música, representando a venda de mais de 10 milhões de cópias.

Em 1984 foi convidado especial para cantar na cerimônia de abertura dos Jogos Olímpicos em Los Angeles. Um ano depois em parceria com com Michael Jackson ele escreve o single "We are the world" para o projeto "USA for Africa", que tinha como objetivo arrecadar fundos para as famílias vítimas da fome na África.

Em 1986, chega às lojas o single "Say you say" (trilha sonora do filme "While Nights") que alcançou o primeiro lugar das paradas, garantindo ao cantor o prêmio Globo de Ouro de melhor canção.

Depois de lançar 3 álbuns solo, Lionel Richie decidiu dar um tempo em sua carreira artística. Em 1992 ele lança "Back to front", mas devido a problemas familiares permanece afastado dos palcos por mais 5 anos. Em 1997 lança "Truly - The Love songs", uma pequena coletânea de suas músicas românticas que fizeram sucesso durante sua carreira.
